Wind Turbines - Wind Power
Wind blows, power flows
Wind turbines are just so cool... You can't see the wind, yet it's there and it's so powerful. In the right location a wind turbine is a serious consideration. However, that's the real issue, location. Most properties in the UK are not suitable for wind turbines. Wind speed and planning are the two big issues.
For a wind turbine to work effectively it needs to be in a healthy non turbulent air flow with no near obstructions such as large trees. Before considering a wind turbine go and fly a kite! If the kite stays rock solid without jumping around then you may have a suitable location.
Planning is the next hurdle. Wind turbines need to be up there... you can’t hide a wind turbine, it won’t work! Also, the bigger the better. Big wind turbines work much more efficiently than small turbines. Generally planning is required and a quick chat with your local planning department is highly recommended.
Location, location, location. If you have it and can get planning then you’re in business. A 6kW grid connected wind turbine will generate up to 10MW annually and cost around £21,000 fully fitted.
To know how much energy your wind turbine is generating you will have your own Naturalwatt webpage (your MicroGrid) that will display LIVE the amount of energy generated and amount of CO2 saved.
