Do I need planning permission?
Yes. Because wind turbine masts start from 11 metres in height, planning permission is required before installation. We can talk to you about this process.
Is my location suitable for
wind power?
This depends on a number of different factors, including:
- The average wind speed for your area
- No trees blocking wind for 50 metres in any direction
- No buildings blocking or dispersing wind within 50 metres
- Planning permission is obtainable
If, for any reason, wind power isn't suitable other renewable energy systems are available.
Solar PV for example, can generate much of your electricity. Solar thermal may reduce your heating and hot water bills substantially.
How much noise do wind
turbines make?
Answer
Do wind turbines disturb local wildlife, such as birds and bats?
Answer
What kind of maintenance do wind turbines require?
Wind power requires more maintenance than other installations like solar PV. This is because they have more mechanical moving parts which are subject to wear and tear. However, wind power has the potential to generate far more electricity and so the technology accounts for its own increased maintenance cost with superior electricity production and payback.

How much electricity can a wind turbine generate?
Answer
What happens when there is
no wind?
If your system is grid connected, you will simply draw from the mains electricity power supply. When you are creating a surplus (i.e. on a windy day and you are not using much electricity) you'll export electricity to the national grid for which you will be paid not only the feed-in tariff, but also a rate for exporting the electricity.
On an off grid system, your power supply will come from a battery array which will be recharged when there is sufficient wind to power the turbine.
